Week 2 (Week of March 24)
Focus: Barnyard Animals & Introduction of Charlotte (Chapters 4–6)
For Teachers (In-Class Reading Time):
Reading: Read Chapters 4–6 with the class, focusing on the barnyard animals and the introduction of Charlotte.
Goal: Introduce and discuss the barn and farm animals in the story (e.g., pig, sheep, barn, hay).
For Parents (At-Home Activity):
Activity: Phonemic Awareness - Segmenting Animal Words
After the chapters are read in class, engage your child in a fun phonics activity at home. Create a list of words related to the barnyard and farm animals (e.g., "pig," "hay," "sheep").Materials Needed: Word cards for each animal-related word and sound boxes for segmenting.
Goal: Build awareness of sounds, syllables, and blending.
Steps to Follow:
Show a word card (e.g., "pig") and say it aloud together.
Break the word into sounds: “/p/ /i/ /g/.” Have your child repeat each sound aloud.
Clap out the sounds (one clap per sound) with your child.
Show a picture or small object that represents the word and have your child match the word to the object.
Extension: Ask your child to name other animals they remember from the story and break those words into sounds too! This helps reinforce their understanding and strengthens their phonemic awareness.
