Week 3 (Week of March 31)
Focus: Wilbur’s Life at the Barn & Character Development (Chapters 7–9)
For Teachers (In-Class Reading Time):
Reading: Read Chapters 7–9 with the class, focusing on Wilbur’s experiences at the barn and further character development.
Goal: Discuss the events in these chapters and explore how Wilbur's life and the relationships with other characters evolve.
For Parents (At-Home Activity):
Activity: Sentence Building
After the chapters are read in class, help your child construct simple sentences about the story events at home. Use word cards to form sentences based on what happens in the story (e.g., “Charlotte is kind” or “Wilbur is scared”).Materials Needed: Word cards, sentence strips, or magnetic letters.
Goal: Reinforce sentence structure, word formation, and phonological awareness while narrating the story.
Steps to Follow:
Show your child a word card (e.g., "Wilbur" or "scared") and say the word aloud together.
Build a simple sentence using the cards, like “Wilbur is scared.”
Have your child repeat the sentence and then create their own sentence using the words (e.g., “Charlotte is kind”).
Level Differentiation:
For additional practice, have your child copy the sentence on paper or in a sand/salt tray.
Encourage them to check their sentence by drawing a smiley face:
Circle for the capital letter at the beginning,
One eye for spaces between words,
Another eye for punctuation,
Smile if the sentence makes sense!
Sounding Out Words: If needed, help your child break words into smaller sounds to sound them out.
