Week 5 (Week of April 14)
Focus: Wilbur is Sold to the County Fair (Chapters 13–15)

For Teachers (In-Class Reading Time):

  • Reading: Read Chapters 13–15 with the class, focusing on the rising tension as Wilbur is sold to the county fair.

  • Goal: Discuss the emotional moments and the key events that build up the tension in the story.

For Parents (At-Home Activity):

  • Activity: Sound-to-Word Connections
After the chapters are read in class, help your child focus on specific sounds in important character names and story words (e.g., "friend," "loyal," "plan"). This activity will help them match the sounds to letters or sounds they have learned.

    • Materials Needed: Sound charts, letter tiles, or small objects that represent words from the story.

    • Goal: Build sound-symbol associations while reinforcing narrative structure through storytelling.

  • Steps to Follow:

    • Pick a word like “friend” and say the word aloud together.

    • Segment the word into sounds: /f/ /r/ /i/ /e/ /n/ /d/.

    • Have your child repeat the sounds and blend them together to say the word.

    • Use letter tiles or magnetic letters to form the word, and help your child match the sounds to the letters.

    • Discussion: Ask your child, “What makes Charlotte a loyal friend?” to reinforce comprehension of the word’s meaning and its connection to the story.

    • Alternative Method: You can also use the Orton-Gillingham method for segmenting words. Watch this video for guidance.
